Green Sea Turtles Have Banner Year in Brevard County

Green sea turtles have been closely watched since 1978 when they joined the list of federally threatened species. According to ABC News, in the decade that followed their addition to the list, green sea turtles averaged fewer than 50 nests a year. With only 1 in 10,000 baby sea turtles surviving into adulthood, protected nesting grounds are critical to the species’ survival.

Decades into the effort to save the species, baby sea turtle survival rates remain rather grim numbers, but another figure is on the rise. ABC News reported that green sea turtles rebounded from a not so great nesting season last year to have one of their strongest seasons ever.

South Brevard Sees Growth Opportunities

Good headlines are always welcomed and stories coming from south Brevard have delivered several such articles recently. There are few expansions in the works that will provide residents of Palm Bay, Melbourne, Suntree and surrounding areas with new jobs, means of travel and medical care facilities, all of which are make for good news.

1. A Melbourne company plans to expand and create jobs in Palm Bay

Florida Today recently reported that Oakridge Global Energy Solutions Corp., which already employs 25 people in Melbourne, has been granted tax breaks and incentives to acquire a manufacturing facility in Palm Bay. The battery maker plans to expand and employ 1,000 people with average annual salaries just over $50,000.

 New Aerospace Jobs Are Coming to Titusville

A wave of new job opportunities is sweeping across the northern end of Brevard County. Several companies are bringing great new jobs to the Space Coast’s north end and in the process bolstering the city of Titusville’s economic rebound.

1. Blue Origin

According to Bay News 9, Blue Origin is expected to announce that it will begin building rockets near Kennedy Space Center, where once they were only launched. The eagerly anticipated announcement is expected some time next week.

Fall is still a few weeks away, but that doesn’t diminish the level of excitement surrounding the season’s arrival in the least bit. Brevard's Top Cop and First Responders Awarded for Performance

Members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue personnel were recently recognized for their efforts to make our community an even better place than it already is.

Top Cop receives humanitarian award

Earlier this week, Space Coast Daily reported Brevard County’s top cop, Sheriff Wayne Ivey, was presented with the 2015 Central Brevard Humane Society’s “Richard H. Stottler Jr. Humanitarian Award” at the 4th annual Tuxes and Tails Gala. Sheriff Ivey accepted the award on behalf of the entire Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the support of homeless animals.

West Shore Jr./Sr. High School students and their parents have a great deal of celebrating to do. Newsweek Magazine ranked the school as one of America’s Top High Schools for 2015.

Out of approximately 24,000 schools across the nation, West Shore Jr./Sr. High School ranked 65th, which in itself is an incredible accomplishment. On top of that, the school was recognized as the number one public high school in the state of Florida.
